Glasses are one of the greatest creations of our kind. Imagine how many inventions would not come to life if we didn’t have them. Today, besides the vital functional role, glasses are also a fashionable accessory. More and more often they serve as a key element of a personal image and become an inseparable artefact of the modern lifestyle.

We don’t have a detailed record of the history of glasses and its position in fashion. There are so many conflicting versions of how they could come to life that it is difficult to tell the facts from the myths. In Ancient Rome, glass spheres filled with water were used for reading books. One could safely say that for many centuries humans looked through the glass and learnt about its influence on vision.

Most probably, first glasses as we know it today appeared in Italy around 13th century under the name of ‘oglarios de vitro’. However, for most of their existence in the human history, glasses were perceived as a frumpy and ugly contraption. It’s good to have those times behind.
